Krystal Barter is a globally recognised advocate, thought leader, and social entrepreneur who has spent more than two decades transforming personal experience into public impact. With a focus on preventative health, genomics, women’s health, and healthcare equity, Krystal’s work bridges storytelling, strategy, and systems change.
At 22, Krystal discovered she carried the BRCA1 gene mutation. By 25, she had undergone a preventative double mastectomy. In the years that followed, she would also navigate surgical menopause after a preventative oophorectomy—sharing each chapter of her experience publicly at a time when few others were. Her decision to speak out became a turning point not only in her life, but in Australia’s national conversation around risk, choice, and women’s health.
Krystal went on to build and lead one of Australia’s first not-for-profits focused on hereditary cancer, supporting thousands of individuals and families in understanding and managing their health risks. Today, she is the founder of Humanise Health, a consultancy that partners with organisations—from government to grassroots—to embed lived experience, lead with storytelling, and drive change that lasts.
Professionally, Krystal is known for her clarity and ability to influence at every level—from community groups to national policy. She is a sought-after speaker, advisor, and strategist whose insights are regularly featured in the media and on stage at major health and innovation events.
Her life and work are grounded in a deep commitment to reimagining what healthcare can be when people—not just processes—are placed at the centre of it.
